Bags of Help for Neyland Foodbank Centre

10th August 2021

Meet Debbie Mills………..She is Milford Haven’s Tesco Community Champion.

Debbie needs your support,

The Neyland Foodbank Centre wants to improve its outside space. Enhancements will ensure shelter, better access and more fresh food provision for the community.

The Neyland Foodbank Centre is part of the Pembrokeshire Foodbank network. The charity wants to improve the Neyland Centre’s outside space for the benefit of the whole Neyland community, but in particular those individuals and families who need to access the foodbank’s service. Covid highlighted the essential need to distribute food safely, quickly and easily from outside the Centre’s building.

One of the foodbank services offered is a weekly ‘Food Share’ scheme to tackle hunger and reduce food waste. This scheme is supported by the Tesco FareShare Go Community Food Connection service. Currently, those receiving this food come to an entrance that is unsheltered from the elements with poor access. The scope of this project is to alter this situation by; adding a canopy to the Centre’s entrance as well as to widen, flatten and recess the path leading up to the food distribution area.

Furthermore, the vision for improvements at the Neyland Foodbank Centre, includes the establishment of a fresh food growing scheme. To this end, vegetable and herb beds will be installed outside the Centre to involve the community with fresh food production. Not only will this scheme improve health and wellbeing of participants, but a portion of the food grown will be donated to the weekly community ‘Food Share’. Additionally, produce will be given to the Community Cafe as a contribution towards the making of fresh, simple meals, such as a vegetable soup.
